One of the best jobs in medical field is a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) who generally have a complete exposure to the patients at their respective places of work. LPN Jobs involve taking full care of the patients needs during their stay. The LPN will usually be taking directions from registered nurses, nurse managers and physicians. The work place will usually be hospitals, clinics, long term care facilities and outpatient facilities, dental surgeries, public health departments and community health clinics. LPN’s  can become qualified over time to become supervisors of other members of staff.

LPN Jobs Duties

The general duties of a licensed practical nurse include giving patients injections and administering their medicine, they will also observe the patients during their stay and take notes of various vital signs and symptoms, these are usually collected by taking temperatures and checking blood pressure. The nurse must be able to perform basic diagnostic tests and treat and dress patients wounds. LPN Jobs will also commonly involve assisting patients in their everyday activities that they may be too ill to do themselves such as bathing them and dressing them, provide help with eating and exercise. LPN’s will commonly keep a careful watch over their patients while they receive treatments and medicines to spot any reactions that may cause the patient harm.

Those wishing to pursue one of the many different types of LPN jobs must plan ahead from an early age, usually from high school so that they may choose the correct subjects to learn to give them a big step up the ladder. The most common subjects that should be taken are History, English, Geometry, child growth and development skills, health occupations and medical professions, food and nutrition, physical education, emergency medical technology, first aid, psychology, chemistry, algebra and biology. Once out of high school the candidate will then need to attend a licensed practical nurse training program which usually lasts 1 year and is offered by vocational schools and career centers. You will cover courses such as anatomy, laboratory procedures, physiology and patient care. Once candidates have successfully completed these then they must take an exam to become a licensed practical nurse.

LPN jobs are, according to the bureau of labor statistics, expected to continue growing through to 2016 by some 14%. Due to the fact that the job of a Licensed practical nurse has so much variety they can be employed in a number of different settings. This means that with such demand and so many placements job opportunities can and will rise in the coming years. An LPN will also be able to specialize in certain areas once they have established themselves and as such can start to earn more money depending on which area they chose. A great career choice for those that are practically minded and are able to take on many different roles.
